Planning Ahead For The Holt Summer Festival

By: Kerry Miller
This year saw the second-ever Holt Summer Festival, a week of art, music, drama, comedy, street entertainment and more which took place during the last week of July. As those who frequent Norfolk luxury hotels will know, Holt is a lovely little place, home to all sorts of shops, galleries, pubs, cafes, restaurants and bars, and it also boasts a fantastic theatre, The Auden, which is at nearby Gresham's School.
As you can imagine, Holt is therefore perfect for a weekend break Norfolk and with the annual Summer Festival getting bigger and better each year, it's worth planning ahead now for next July. Perhaps the best part of this year's event was the quirky street entertainment, which included everything from clowns and magicians to singers, and those staying in hotels in North Norfolk were no doubt surprised to see brightly-dressed performers playing imaginary instruments and Shakespearean actors giving renditions of the Bard in Budgens!
The team behind the Holt Summer Festival tries hard to include something for everyone and all sorts of activities were on offer for the little ones this year, too, from art and craft workshops to lessons in how to be funny. And there was also plenty on offer for the grown-ups, from the stand-up comedy nights to a host of marvellous music. Although only in its second year, this year's Holt Summer Festival attracted the famous jazz guitarist Martin Taylor and his group, Spirit of Django, as well as the renowned St Martin-in-the-Fields orchestra.
There were also some very interesting exhibitions and presentations, including a series of wildlife photographs by BBC Springwatch presenter Chris Packham and a fine art exhibition by the legendary Rolf Harris. Indeed, visitors to North Norfolk hotels were spoilt for choice this summer and Holt was packed to the rafters with holidaymakers coming to take in the sights. So if you're interested in the Arts and are keen on North Norfolk, make a note in your diary now of next year's Holt Summer Festival which is scheduled to take place again during the last week of July.

Norfolk's Coastline Has a Special Hollywood Touch

By: Kerry Miller
The beaches of North Norfolk are among the finest in the United Kingdom.
The long, open stretches of sand, have been popular for decades with bathers, walkers and holidaymakers staying in North Norfolk hotels.
In addition horse riders have taken advantage of the expanse to exercise their equine charges and also naturalists find the area popular with the opportunity of focussing their binoculars on the amazing wildlife that can be seen from the Norfolk shoreline.
But even for people on their first weekend break Norfolk, the beaches of the area's coastline may already have an element of familiarity to them.
This is because a number of stretches have made appearances in Hollywood films or popular TV series.
Stay in any of the hotels in North Norfolk and it won't be long before someone points out an area that has appeared in a memorable film shot.
Perhaps the one that gets talked about most is a stretch of Holkham beach, which famously appeared in the closing sequence of Shakespeare in Love and had Gwyneth Paltrow strolling along its golden expanse.
But other beaches have also had their 15 minutes of fame. Some of the areas around Wells have been featured in the popular TV series Kingdom about a Norfolk solicitor working in a small market town. The programme starred the comedian Stephen Fry who is also from Norfolk and still lives in the area.
It's not surprising that film-makers are attracted to this area because the landscape is so appealing and there is a number of Norfolk luxury hotels where leading members of the crew and cast can stay in style while the filming is taking place.
In addition, the area has a marvellous reputation for excellent restaurants with innovative menus making the most of the wonderful fresh produce that is grown right across the area and inevitably seafood is popular with the proximity to the coastline. Expect to see Cromer crab, local oysters and line-caught sea bass on the menus of many establishments right across the area. In addition, when in season, sampling the local seaweed - samphire - is a delicacy not to be missed.

Starting Your Vacation By Renting A Car

By: Veronica Scott
In today's modern world, it's true that everyone needs a vacation at some point. However, air travel is pricey and can be frustrating, let alone the rules instituted by the TSA seem to change at the drop of a hat. However, on the flip side of flying, travelling in your old station wagon can also seem less than exciting.
One way to spice up your vacation time is to rent a car to get to your destination. Think of it as a vacation away from your vehicle! You owe it to yourself to have some fun. By using a rental car, instead of your own, you can choose the kind of car that fits your travel needs perfectly or one that projects the lifestyle you hope to emulate while away, as well as keep the miles low on your own vehicle. When deciding on what kind of car to rent or where to rent it from do your research and determine the best value as well as the ideal vehicle for both your budget and the nature of your vacation.
First, you need to decide what kind of car you want to rent. When picking a vehicle, consider both how many people will be riding and what you will be doing once you get to your destination. If you are going to the beach for a romantic getaway with your husband or wife a convertible would be an excellent choice. If you are taking the entire family to the mountains for some skiing or snowboarding a sport utility vehicle would be perfect.
Once you have decided on the details of your trip, now is the time to start shopping around. There will most likely be a variety of car rental companies that will be able to provide the kind of vehicle that you are looking for. Call each and inquire about pricing, insurance options, and if they have the exact vehicle you want available during the time you would like to rent it. If you don't feel like calling around, try shopping online, however before you book, make sure you speak with someone to guarantee you know what you are getting and the terms of the deal. Remember it is going to hamper your vacation significantly if you wanted a Porsche but ended up with a pickup truck.
Once you have found the perfect car and booked your rental, get organized. Keep all of the paperwork in an easily accessible place so that you can quickly and conveniently take possession of the car you will be renting. This includes the rental agreement, the insurance information (always get the insurance, remember your personal car insurance might not cover a wreck in a rental car), and any identification that you will need to present when checking in at the car rental agency. Keeping this information organized and ready will save you time at the checkout counter.
Renting a car for vacation travel is a great way to add some excitement to the trip. Everyone loves driving or riding in a new car, especially when it is completely different from the one they're used to. When planning your next getaway, consider renting a car instead of taking your own. If you follow these tips, it will really add to the excitement of your vacation.

Guidelines – How to Properly Prepare for an African Safari

By: Mia Cusack
An African Safari should be the holiday of a lifetime, yet sometimes it turns into a nightmare rather than a dream vacation, simply because the travellers failed to properly prepare for their trip.

Basic preparations are extremely important regardless if you are exploring the Great Plains with the red-robed Masai, one of Africa's fabled tribes, or want to observe the antelopes at the rim of the Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania. Without the necessary planning you are challenging Lady Luck, and may end up with a few hard-to-tackle problems.

If you want to enjoy your African safari holiday to the fullest, the following guidelines will help you achieve your goal:

Travel itinerary and flights

• Your passport and visa documents have to be valid, up to date and in order.
• Make travel insurance mandatory.
• When booking your trip, leave yourself ample time between connecting flights. Flight delays happen everywhere, even in Africa.
• Check out which time of year is best to travel within Africa.
• Keep a pocket dictionary at hand in case you encounter locals who do not speak English.
• Keep the different time zone in mind!

Clothing

• Carry a change of clothing in your carry-on luggage in case your bags are lost during air travel.
• It is recommended to wear comfortable, casual cotton clothing when travelling through tropical Africa. Organic material allows your skin to freely breathe in the hot, humid   climate. Stick to neutral shades, such as khaki, beige, brown or dark green. Bright colours can frighten the animals.
• Pack a few warmer clothing pieces for the early mornings and cooler evening. Depending on the season, also bring rain gear.
• Depending on your destination, pack appropriate hiking boots and other shoe wear. Stilettos won't cut it in the bush unless you are hosting a comedy show for the locals!
• Hats, caps and other head coverings will protect you against the persistent overhead sun.
• While in Africa always remember that you are a guest, so respect the local cultures and religious beliefs by wearing appropriate clothing.
• Limit your jewellery. The lions and elephants do not care if you wear diamonds!

Medical

Although there are many sophisticated medical facilities throughout metropolitan areas, medical care may be limited while visiting remote tourist attractions, or during extended game drives. To protect yourself,
• Make sure your immunisations are up to date.
• Always pack a first aid kit. It should include band-aids, aspirin, anti diarrheal pills/laxatives, antiseptic and insect bite cream, headache medication, anti malaria tablets,   rehydration powder, as well as your usual prescription medication. Your travel agency can advise you on which care products are absolutely necessary.
• Carry lots of sunscreen and insect repellent. Wear quality sunglasses for eye protection.
• Drink bottled or purified water whenever possible.

Various interesting tidbits

• Copy passports, credit cards, airline tickets, reservation confirmations, and other pertinent identification and documents. Keep one copy with you, and leave one copy with   your contact at home. You can also scan them and save them on a secure internet site. Many hotels have internet access, which will allow you to access the file and print out   additional copies should you need to.
• Never carry large sums of money with you.
• Lock up valuables in the hotel safe; if you are spending a few days at a camp, keep tempting items out of sight. Never leave valuables unattended in a car or bus! What is not   there cannot be stolen!

Easy Campfire Meals for Supper on Your Next Trip

By: Lee M Williams
Sitting across the campfire at night is one of the pleasures of camping. Its even much better when you have easy campfire meals to cook dinner around the coals. The smell from the cooking continually brings hungry campers in for a great dinner.
Easy camp meals can be one pot meals of stew or grilled chicken around the coals or meals that everyone gets to help out with that the camp cook plans and supervises. The dinners that everyone takes a part in are some of my favorite .
Hobo Dinners
Hobo dinners are foil wrapped meals that are cooked directly in the coals of a fire. The basic components are some type of meat, potatoes, other vegetables and seasonings. The possibilities for range are endless. I like to assemble the components for the dinner on the table along with the heavy duty tin foil to wrap it in and let everyone create their own meal. Don't skimp on the tin foil and be positive that the foil packages are wrapped up well and sealed before they go onto the coals. Nothing is more dissapointing than to pull out your meal and find all the juice has drained out and your meal is burnt and dry.
Sausage on a Stick
This is yet another easy campfire meal that everyone cooks for themselves above the fire. You will require biscuit dough (homemade or refrigerated), hot dogs or other sausages and skewers to cook them on. Wrap the sausages within the biscuit dough and cook above hot coals. The meal is finished when the biscuit dough is cooked through. Serve with mustard and relish, no need for buns!
These are just a couple of easy campfire meals you may plan that everyone cooks for themselves. Other kinds of easy campfire mealsinclude one-pot meals such as Dutch Oven cooking and pasta for a filling dinner.

Safety Precautions To Take When Travelling

By: Mick McCarthy
Before heading off on a long journey, whether across the city, or possibly a more rural area, I'd like to make a few recommendations regarding how to prepare, both yourself as well as your vehicle, so that you can have a smooth a journey as is possible.

Firstly, I would like to suggest that you bring enough water and food for use on your journey. We can't say for sure when a mishap or emergency might occur, and if we're stuck out on the road away from home, the very last thing we need in this stressful situation is to be dehydrated or hungry, as this will cloud the decision making process skills. Another primary thing to take with you on your trip is money. It's amazing, how many people I discover who either forget to bring their wallet's along with them, or have a lack of money whilst travelling. A cellular phone is another object in which to bring with you on your travels. Should you have money, you may think you will be covered, and won't require a cell phone in case of accident or emergency, however, if you're in an unsafe location and concerned with stepping out from the car to make a call, or have a poor physical condition which doesn't allow it, a cellular phone can literally be considered a life saver.

When travelling, it is recommended you dress for the most unlikely of weather conditions, and should you not feel like carrying this out, as a minimum have something at hand which may protect you in this manner. If you're driving within a heavy snowfall in the middle of winter, it is not a bright idea to dress light. Whilst could very well be much more comfortable in this way when in the car, if an accident or emergency were to occur whilst travelling, and you were to be stuck within the vehicle longer than planned, you might want some decent clothing on, especially if your low on gas, and the car's going to cut out, the heaters with it. If you don't feel like dressing properly for the occasion, at a minimum have something inside the boot that can assist you, for instance a coat, umbrella, even a thick blanket if you happen to get stuck in the car for a long stretch of time.

These are some elementary safety ideas to take along with you when planning you're long trip, and I'd like to thank you for reading this article.
